Project info

When Tony came and talked to us about upgrading the audio in his Jimny, we knew right away we had to do something a little extra to satisfy his sound quality benchmark. He wanted a SQ focused system that would make him happy to sit in the Jimny for long road trips and get lost in the music, whilst taking up the absolute minimal cabin space.

After some discussion around the sound profile he was aiming for, we knew the speakers needed to be Morel, and Helix was the absolute obvious choice for DSP and amplification duties. For the sub, we would normally go for our under-seat custom sub box for the Jimny, but Tony preferred to sacrifice a little bit of boot space in order to get a higher quality bass solution with a Helix ported 8” sub box.

Of course, that little tin can Jimny cabin was going to need the β€œfull house” acoustic treatment and deadening as well!

results

We finally settled on the tried and proven Morel Tempo Ultra 502 MkII components for the front stage, after a bit of to-and-fro with what would fit with minimal modification to the car. These were expertly installed into the doors along with significant deadening and acoustic treatment, with the tweeters fitted into custom-modified sail trims to obtain optimal aiming. To create a tonally accurate rear fill, a pair of Morel Integration Performance Intgra speakers were installed with some custom one-off speaker mounts.

A Helix M Six DSP amp powers all the speakers in a fully active configuration, with a DSP output feeding a Helix M One amplifier to power the Helix 8” sub that sits behind the back seat. For system control, a Helix Conductor is mounted in the dash to give various audio and tuning controls over the system. To make sure that the cabin acoustics didn’t destroy the audio experience, the entire cabin and interior trims were deadened, insulated and treated with a combination of Morel Acudamp and StandartPLast materials, resulting in a cabin space that is eerily quiet!

Of course, our in-house DSP tuning wizard worked his magic to produce a sonic masterpiece with precision staging, and an EQ curve aligned to our in-house RTA target curve.

β€œHey Karl, I just want to say thanks for all the work on the car. I am really happy with the workmanship. Sound deadening attention to detail is on point, I'm pretty fussy (as you probably can tell haha) and it's always good to have the work exceed your expectations.”
